First Harvest ~ Sprinklers ~ and Mistakes

This week we got a couple things to help our garden. The first was a couple vine climbers for our peas! I am so excited about these! For the last years all we've used were sticks from the woodland near our house and yarn, but those weren't very tall, so it prevented our peas from getting as big as they could and we also had to make new ones every year. But these are really tall (almost four feet above the ground) AND we can reuse them year after year.

Did I mention we started our first harvest this week too? We harvested peas...

... and lettuce!

We got a sprinkler system two days ago which was basically three small, round sprinklers with connecting hoses (I meant to post about it, but... sorry), but those didn't reach the entire garden so this morning Dad and I went to Home Depot to get this new awesome sprinkler. I barely have to turn on the water and in twenty minutes it waters the entire garden (including the grass inside the picket fence, the pebble pathways between each garden and a portion of the hill on the other side of the fence!)!

The cucumber has bloomed.

Watermelon

I accidentally said in the last post that the big plant in GG's bed was pumpkin. Sorry, but it is actually Zuchini and we already have a big one!

THIS is the pumpkin. (I think )

(P.S. Rebekah and Michaela, this is kinda funny. I was chatting with Cydney and she asked what I had been doing lately. So I started telling her all the new things about my garden {since we did quite a bit this week} and she basically said, So why didn't you post about it. haha So I took these pictures and wrote this post while we chatted! haha)

Pictures

Here are those long promised pictures of our garden. So far, we haven't eaten anything from it, everything we planted is thriving, but we never bought tomato seeds, so... No tomatoes this year!

 Cucumber

Zucchini

Peas
 (just flowers so far)

Pumpkin
(Angelina's plants are doing the BEST! This is hers)

Carrots
(This is also hers. It's like a BUSH! Tons of Carrots! I only have about ten)
Ever seen carrots from under the leaves? Now you have! (this first one had flash)

Sorry about the wait! Hope you enjoyed the pictures!

Planted... AGAIN!

Today we planted all the seeds except the tomatoes (because we are out of seeds), broccoli, and cauliflower (because, like I said in a different post, they are supposed to be planted at the end of summer. {We haven't bought the berry plants yet.}

They Didn't Survive

I guess our "head start" was too early, because they are all dead. :(

We'll have to start over.

April 19th, 2013

Today I planted all of the squash (that was still alive) in the big garden beds. I hope they were just suffering because their roots were cramped and now they have TONS of room to grow! :)
I am still praying that they'll survive!

Moving

I took the plants outside today and am going to bring them in tonight. I have to do it to prepare the plants to brave the cold... I just PRAY that they will survive!

Dead

Today I checked on the plants and found that the lettuce is dying and the watermelon is completely dissolved! I guess we'll have to plant new ones. I wish the frosts would end. :(

March 25th, Monday

Today the cabbage(just barely) and the lettuce that I planted five days ago, sprouted. They are super tiny and I didn't really want to water them for fear that they'd drown!

Snow in the spring

Last night it hailed and today we got about a half inch of SNOW!
And it's the second day of spring!
I guess the frosts aren't going away.

Also, because our Cauliflower and Broccoli aren't doing too well, I looked up some tips on how to grow them. Well, I found out that they do not do well in the summer and you're supposed to plant them in the late summer/early fall.

Lettuce

I just planted two kinds of lettuce; oakleaf and black seeded and I planted cabbage. The frosts are not coming as often now, so it won't be long 'till we move from the planters into the big garden beds.

[ I noticed one mistake on the plan, but I fixed it. I had writen Celery, but we are really going to grow Cabbage. ]

(P.S. I am going to but a new camera cord this week so I can start taking pictures! I don't know where on earth that other one went!)
